WTF is "Tanner Orothy of the UNIVERSE"?

OK, so I am finally writing about my exhibit. For this post though, I think just explaining what this title is about is going to be enough. Getting to the actual work is going to be another beast to deal with on its own.

So, before this exhibit, I had another show called "Dan Shirley" like 5 years ago. The title is just a word play of the Japanese word "Danshari" which means to organize and getting rid of things you don't need in your life, kind of like what Konmari does. It was a show where with almost every pice of artwork I had lying around and I sold them dirt cheap, just so I can clear out some space at home. That went really well and I was able to get rid of most of the work. 5 years on, inevitably I had more unfinished artwork cluttering up the space. So, I thought I would do another one, but calling it "Dan Shirley" again seemed boring, so I called it "Tanner Orothy" which I derived from the Japanese word "Tana Oroshi". Tana Oroshi is a word often used in retail business when they take inventory of all the mercahndise within a retail location.

So, I had that idea like half a year ago and I had the image of how the title should look, so I wrote (drew?) that on that piece of paper you see on the top left. Though when it came to making the show poster, I couldn't find that piece of paper and I ended up drawing the new title. I think I prefer the original one though. Maybe I will make a new poster.

what about the UNIVERSE part? Well, since this is not just my show, but it's a 2 person show with Kao, I asked her if she wanted to add to the title and she said something about reference to space. So, I added "of the UNIVERSE". If you were to take this title seriously, it would mean that we're taking inventory of the UNIVERSE. We're not quite there, but if we managed to let you imagine that, then it's done its job.

I will be delving into the show itself in upcoming posts, but what I thought this show was going to be, which was just to finish up some unfinished works and letting them go, didn't turn out that way. I kind of got way into it and I ended up with up with unexpected, but happy results. So, the show is much more about the work than I thought it would be. That's why I am taking the time to show more of it online. Not sure you will agree with me about the work, but I feel like they are worth sharing, at least at this moment.
